Elite Training

Our classes are unique 1 hour experiences that have been specifically designed to help motivated individuals reach their fitness goals. Each class includes elements of high-intensity interval training, division I strength & conditioning, core strength training, suspension training and plyometric training. We emphasize group training and believe in a team approach to fitness.

Our staff share a passion for fitness, athletics, and community. We are proud of our staff and their continued effort towards bettering themselves and those around them. Customer satisfaction and safety are our top priorities! Our coaches have one mission: to do everything in our power to help every individual reach their personal fitness goals. We are motivators who coach with passion and intensity in the pursuit of results. #ChaseTheLion

MEMBERSHIPS
Unlimited Access

Memberships include unlimited classes and access to our facility; 7 days a week. We want members of our pride to be able to access the facility and attend classes at a time that’s convenient for them. Our members are our family. Monthly membership cost is $160. Payments are made monthly - no contracts or initiation fees. Everyone’s first class is always free! Ask about our student and service men and women discounts!

What is Blue Lion Fitness?

Blue Lion Fitness is a high-energy brand of training that allows individuals to engage in a dynamic training technique with other motivated members. Blue Lion Fitness is committed to uniting individuals in a team atmosphere to achieve results.

‘Blue’ represents the city in which this facility was founded. Blue represents loyalty, faith, and confidence. Similar to our members, we bleed blue.

The lion is a uniquely majestic animal. The apex predator of the animal kingdom admired for its courage and strength, the lion maintains loyalty and will fiercely defend itself and members of its pride. A dominant and clever hunter, the lion has been used throughout history as a symbol for strength and honor.

Ryan Van Bergen     Co-Owner / Head Coach    Email Ryan

Ryan grew up in Las Vegas and competed at the top level for both prep basketball and football. Upon moving to Whitehall, MI in 2004, he earned varsity letters in 3 sports: football, basketball, and track and also won the 2007 Detroit Athletic Club’s: Michigan Male Athlete of the Year Award. Ryan was recruited to the University of Michigan to play football, where he started in 38 games and was co-defensive captain of the 2012 Sugar Bowl. He also was named National Defensive Player of the Week and was named a 2-time NSCA Strength and Conditioning All-American. Ryan is drawn to this work due to his prior experience in both professional and collegiate athletics and has extensive knowledge regarding training regimens developed for division I strength and conditioning programs.

Danny Roth     Co-Owner / Head Coach     Email Danny

Danny is a true athlete and competitor. Danny started competing at the highest level of athletics at a very young age in multiple sports. In high school, Danny earned varsity letters in 3 sports: soccer, wrestling, and lacrosse. He won a New England Small School Championship in Lacrosse and was also ranked one of the top Prep School Wrestlers in New England. He was named athlete of the day by the Ann Arbor News twice in his senior year. Danny attended Western Michigan University where he received his Bachelor of Science degree and played rugby, competing against some of the top international rugby clubs. After college Danny moved to Los Angeles where he worked for the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and modeled. He moved back to Ann Arbor in 2008 to pursue a Masters in kinesiology at the University of Michigan. Since being in Ann Arbor, Danny has trained all variations of athletes- from the average person looking to improve their fitness level to preparing Division 1 athletes.

Joon Shin    Instructor   Email Joon

Joon found his love for strength & conditioning in 2013 when he was looking up power clean tutorial videos on YouTube and found the Rich Froning “Day in the life” documentary video. Joon was immediately obsessed on trying his hand in the world of strength & conditioning and one day competing. Joon trains 5 days a week and does his best to do a long aerobic session on his days off. Although he has tried eating clean for a while, Joon eventually determined that he needed to have some leeway in his diet in order to consistently train at a high volume. Joon eats fairly clean, but he loves cheeseburgers. Joon has developed his coaching style to be methodical but with the flexibility to adapt his strategy based on the athlete he is coaching. His favorite part of training is by far the Olympic lifts. Joon’s favorite movement is the Snatch, and his least favorite movement is anything involving the Assault Bike. Joon is a recent graduate from the University of Michigan.

Matt McCarty    Instructor   Email Matt

Matt’s passion for sport and fitness has always come naturally. From a young age, he was involved with wrestling competitions, basketball, football, and lacrosse. As he transitioned to high school, he earned Varsity letters in lacrosse and football and began lifting, but it wasn’t until after he was already out of school that he truly started to develop his passion for lifting. With only two years of true lifting experience, Matt is now a nationally ranked junior Olympic Lifter with ambitions to compete in the 2020 and 2024 Olympics. Matt is set to attend Wayne State University next semester to pursue a degree in Physical Therapy and earn his USAW Certification. When asked why he is so passionate about group fitness, he responded, “It’s just better to suffer with people than to suffer by yourself.”

Greg Bokor    Creative Director   Email Greg

Greg has been a well-respected and awarded creative lead internationally for the past 25 years. He earned Adweek’s east coast art director of the year in his first 5 years in the business, then becoming one of the most awarded creatives of his generation. He has been acknowledged by the Cannes Film festival, the One Show, D&AD, and The Andy’s to name a few prestigious Advertising excellence festivals. Greg has worked at some of the most prestigious ad agencies in the country where he has created campaigns for L.L. Bean, Swiss Army and Polaroid to name a few. Greg has made it a mission to use his talents to inspire and create ideas around causes he feels passionate about. Greg continues to consult with agencies around the country, and is also an artist.

Class Descriptions

Blue Lion Fitness specializes in unique 1-hour classes that have been specifically designed to help motivated individuals reach their fitness goals. Each class includes elements of high-intensity interval training, Division I Strength & Conditioning, core strength training, suspension training and plyometric training. We emphasize group training and believe in a team approach to fitness.

Blue Lion Barbell

Blue Lion Barbell is a 3 day-a-week Olympic lifting program held here at Blue Lion Fitness. This program focuses on two lifts: the Clean & Jerk and Snatch. This course focuses heavily on technique to build fundamentally sound movement patterns in these lifts. Performing these lifts will increase ones’ strength, power, speed, flexibility, stamina, coordination, accuracy, balance, agility, as well as cardiovascular endurance.

Blue Lion Fitness Weekend

Blue Lion Fitness Weekend Classes are more geared toward muscular endurance and cardiovascular conditioning than our weekday classes. Many of the movements are the same as or similar to the exercises performed in the weekday classes, but movements will be performed at lower weights with more repetitions. Saturday classes are more likely to include multiple movements to be achieved within a certain time constraint whereas our Sunday class is more interval based where members are challenged to complete as many movements as possible in a window of work time as well as a provided certain amount of rest time. Please note: Saturday’s 9am class is our most challenging class of the week and may extend to an hour and a half!

Glutey Camp

Glutey Camp is a class that focuses on lower body, specifically glutes and hamstrings. The 60-minute class consists of interval training to help stabilize and strengthen lower body muscles. It is formatted as a low weight, high repetition workout sure to make your lower body muscles burn!

SEQ FIT

SEQ FIT or Sequence Fitness is an endurance based training technique that uses exercise sequence blocks to create a total body workout. Each sequence is designed to target a specific muscle group, and when they are linked together, the result is an efficient non-stop session. SEQ FIT is a 55-minute strength class which uses body weight and low free weight as resistance. Muscle groups are meticulously worked to fatigue from every possible angle and with a detail-oriented focus; cueing is centered on correct body positioning, stability, and range of motion. (Not included in BLF Membership, additional fees may apply).

Our facility features top of the line equipment as well as a field turf area for sport performance and sport-specific training. We have premium flooring, top quality exercise equipment, and an expansive free weight area. We believe our members should have use of the safest and most modern equipment available.
